Governors demand representation at WTO conference
16 December 2015, 15:12
Nairobi - The Council of Governors now want to be included at the World Trade Organization (WTO) conference which is ongoing at KICC, Nairobi.
Chairman of Agricultural committee in the council, Nderitu Gachagua said the issues being discussed at the WTO affect the counties directly.
Gachagua said there was possibility that WTO will discuss issues of tea, coffee and horticulture and any agreement on the agriculture sub-sectors will affect counties and not national government.
He however welcomed any intervention that will improve farmers’ income.
He asked the State to increase financial allocation in the agriculture sector to 10 percent since currently it stands at four percent.
“With 10 per cent, this will mean that farmers can now do irrigation better, and they can access credit for pesticides and fertilizer. Agriculture competes with other sectors when it comes to budgetary allocation,” said Gachagua who is also Nyeri County Governor.
