Governor supporters arrested for illegal meeting in Othaya

07 September 2016, 20:34 Joseph Njung’eh

Nairobi - A section of impeached Nyeri Governor Nderitu Gachagua’s supporters have been arrested by police for holding illegal meeting and attempting to conduct unlicensed demonstration in Othaya town.

Area Deputy County Commissioner Stanley Kamande said the young men will be arraigned in court for trial.

They were among hundreds of residents who were to demonstrate against impeachment of the governor, saying the process was flawed.

The demonstrators, some in personal cars, motorbikes and others on foot, were brandishing placards with writings of supporting the embattled governor whose fate now lies with the Senate.

However, Kamande said law was not followed in preparation of the demonstrations.

“The organizers had not obtained a licence from police and had not notified the administration about their meeting for provision of security. They were also supposed to provide the route of the demos.  Procedures and due process of law must be followed,” stated the administrator.

However, the demonstrators including businessmen denied having not obtained licence saying the process was delayed by police in efforts to deny them.

“We had applied for the licence but we were delayed as ploy of denial. Business community is disappointed by police actions,” said one Hosea Githaiga.

He said the protest was to indicate they were against the MCAs’ move, adding that the County boss had performed.

“The governor is development oriented but there are machinations of spoiling his name,” added businesswoman Mary Wangechi.
