Narok - The government has commenced a voluntary registration of firearms for the communities living in the rift valley. This comes a move to end the crime rate in the region that comes with cattle rustling.
Former Rift Valley coordinator, Osman Warfa warned that communities will not be allowed to own guns without a proper channel. He has warned of stern action against those who do not heed to the government's call to surrender all illegally acquired firearms and those interested to register their guns to do so by visiting the nearest chief’s offices.
For a period of one year running, the communities along the volatile areas along the Pokot-Turkana border have enjoyed immense peace.

However, some outdated cultural practices such as cattle rusting and Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) are on the rise. Warfa said those practices have retarded growth and development in the region.
West Pokot Governor, Simon Kachapin has supported the move and assured that the the County government will work closely with Security organs to support peace activities in the region and support reformed warriors with alternative livelihood.
The National Cohesion and Integration Commission has in the last few months been holding meetings and peace caravans in the region to bring the long lost peace among the communities.
