Nairobi - A 13-year-old girl has died after undergoing traditional circumcision (Female Genital Mutilation-FGM) in Sigor, Elgeyo-Marakwet County.
The Class Seven pupil died along Sigor-Chesoi road as she was being taken to hospital after bleeding profusely.
Two others have been hospitalized at St Benedictine Sister’s Chesongoch Mission Hospital after the bleeding.
The two were taken and abandoned at the hospital gate by their parents who escaped fearing arrest.
An Administration Policeman and chief were roughed up by the villagers who also snatched the officer’s gun as the duo attempted to storm a hideout and stop traditionalists from subjecting the girls to FGM.
It is suspected that about 1200 girls were circumcised on Sunday and Monday nights.
Area Deputy County Commissioner, Hussein Alaso said the FGM activities were conducted simultaneously in all villages within the region.
Alaso said tens of police officers have been deployed in the region to curb the activities and arrest the perpetrators.
