Four people perish in Busia road accident

16 December 2015, 15:12 Ben Wafula

Busia - A brother and sister were among four people who died on Wednesday afternoon when a trailer crushed them to death at Esikulu in Matayos along Busia-Kisumu road.

Sources said all the four are residents of Machakusi village in Teso South sub county.

The brother and sister were living with their aunt in Samia sub county. However, their father sent a motorcycle to have them return home for Christmas festivities.

When the boda boda set out to Samia, a friend of the deceased girl accompanied the boda boda. The four including the operator were driving back in the same motorbike when the accident occurred.

Busia Traffic Base Commander Gerald Gitau said the four were traveling in the opposite direction when the truck hit them as it tried to overtake another vehicle.

They died on the spot. Residents managed to remove the woman's body which was trapped underneath the trailer.

Busia Governor Sospeter Ojaamong who was returning from Namboboto in Samia witnessed the accident which attracted scores of people.

Ojaamong promised to put bumps in the township saying speeding vehicles had led to loss of many lives along the busy road.

He warned motorists and boda boda operators to observe traffic rules to avoid more deaths especially during this festive season.

The area Base Commander called on boda boda operators to wear helmets saying the boda boda operator who was involved in the fatal accident had none.

The accident caused traffic jam for over one hour before normalcy returned.

The bodies were moved to Busia County Referral Hospital awaiting postmortem examination.
