Nairobi - Former head of Civil Service and Secretary to the Cabinet Joseph Arap Letting has died at a Nairobi hospital Monday.
Letting has been suffering from a number of illnesses, a source close to the family told News24.
He served in retired President Daniel Moi's government in various positions.
President Uhuru Kenyatta was saddened by the news.
" His commitment to serve Kenyans was noted as after he retired, he was appointed an assistant minister in former President Daniel Arap Moi's government," Uhuru said.
" He was known as a brilliant, hard-working and efficient leader and will be missed. On behalf of the people of Kenya, I send his family and friends my deepest condolences," he added.
Letting was one of the few leaders not tainted with corruption scandals during Moi's era and was known as a quiet but tough acting individual.
