Forget politicians, Kenya is ours to protect

18 April 2016, 18:22 Onyango Onyango

Nairobi - Sunday history was written. The Shujaa( Kenya sevens national rugby team) Won the first main cup in IRB rugby series.

It was their seventh attempt at the finals. The last being in 2013 under ex coach Mike Friday.

For the first time after a while all Kenyans were united in celebration. No one asked their tribe or where they come from. They are Kenyans and the whole country was celebrating.

For once no one was throwing jabs at the other based on his genitals or some old stereotypes. We were raising the the four colours of our nation. The spirit we hardly have especially when politics is involved.

The spirit of forefathers was awaken in us. Now let's go back down the memory lane. During the struggle for independence Kenyans stood as one.

They provided shoulder for one another. They all united to fight the oppressive regime.

When Mau Mau fighters were arrested one CMG Argwings Kodhek stood up and provided legal representation. He saw them as his countrymen and he had to fight for them. That's the spirit we have allowed politicians to take away from us.

The spirit of togetherness. The spirit of a nation.

If Kenya burns we will burn with. Because it's what we have. Time has come when we must unite and fight common enemies.

They are neither a person from another tribe, religion nor race. The common enemies are corruption, poverty and ignorance.

Let the politicians politick but us remain together. In your neighbourhood, if you lack something your help is possibly going to be that neighbour who is neither member of your community nor your political party.

He is your friend and you live together till that politician comes and tell it's not right and you blatantly say yes.

Then you start hating without a reason. You just hate. Let the spirit of a nation brought by Kenya sevens remain in us.

Help us remain together as we mend the fabrics we have allowed the politicians to destroy. The fabric of love, tolerance and togetherness. For if the fabric is strong we will remain strong thus enough energy to fight the common enemies.
