14 October 2016, 09:22 S Mbinya

Mood swings affect a good percentage of childbearing age, and they occur at three main phases in the cycle of a woman; menstruation, pregnancy and menopause. Only a few people experience mood swings during these three phases, depending on the time of the month, environment they are living in, diet and psychological health status. PMS is a medical condition that is characterized by sudden mood changes that has a link with deficiencies in the body, and characterized by extreme irritability to the extent of self pity, suicidal thoughts and crying.

Change in lifestyle is one of the essential tips for getting rid of mood swings. Stop using substances and alcohol. Addictive drugs can also cause your stress levels to rise. Learn simple ways to handle stress from work or at home, such as yoga and meditation techniques. Start jogging over the weekends, and take the stairs in order to manage stress. Reduce the amount of sugar and salt in your diet, and also minimize the amount of chocolate and caffeine in your meals.

There are some types of foods that can help you to manage mood swings naturally. Herbs such as chamomile should be added to tea in order to boost your mood. St. John's Wort is a natural anti-depressant that is usually sold in the form of supplements. It releases chemicals that help sooth you central nervous system. Ginseng is a natural remedy for stress as well as other conditions such as low stamina and immunity. Black cohosh and evening Primrose are also among the most effective natural remedies for PMS.

Fish oil is also effective in getting rid of mood swings as well as stress. Fish oil is rich in a fatty acid that helps synthesize the neurotransmitters responsible for happiness. Other than fish oil, specific types of nuts, seeds, grains and meats also contain traces of omega-3 fats. When hormone serotonin is released from the brain, you remain happy all day long. Women of childbearing age are advised to take foods rich in omega-3 fats in order to reduce their risk of developing PMS.

Aromatherapy has also been recommended for years on people who experience irritability, stress, anxiety and depression. Any stress related symptom can be cured by using the right scent under the pillow or vapor in a glass of water. Chamomile, roses and passion flower are among the most effective herbs for aromatherapy. Whether boiled and taken as a beverage, or put under the pillow to release their healing aroma, these herbs release a scent that soothes the brain and helps your brain to o through the five phases of sleep smoothly.

A glass of warm milk and a teaspoonful of honey can serve as natural sleep aids, because they prepare your brain for a good night's sleep. This is among the foods recommended for the period just before bedtime, because they cure the symptoms of stress such as anxiety and sleeplessness. Milk and honey also cure the effects of stress, especially low energy levels and depression. Mental fatigue affects your attention, focus and performance, but can be restored by this simple recipe.

A good supply of potassium and other minerals can also help combat mood swings in women, especially those suffering from PMS. Pumpkin seeds, bananas, water melon, onions, broccoli, dates, corns and blackcurrant are efficient remedies for mood swings.

Massage also produces a healing effect on the affected persons, and everyone needs a good massage in order to remain productive. Dealing with daily stresses of life can leave you weak and unhealthy, but massage can restore your energy back.
