Nairobi - Families of slain Kenya Defence Forces officers in Somalia will wait months for compensation, it has emerged.
Some families that spoke to News24 stated that they were told by senior KDF officials that the compensation takes time to be processed.
It is understood that some may wait as many as 6 months to be compensated.
" We were told it could take as much as 6 months," the brother of a soldier from the Rift Valley who died in Al Adde Somalia told News24 asking not to be named for fear of victimization.
Another stated that the funds would allegedly have to be budgeted for first.
" I was told that it has to go through the budget. How that is true I don't know," the mother of another stated.
CORD leader Raila Odinga had asked the government to fast-track the payment to allow families that depended on the late soldiers to move on and plan for the future.
" The soldiers who died were breadwinners. I ask that the government respect that and quicken the payments," he said at the burial of a KDF officer in Kilgoris.
The KDF did not respond when News24 forwarded its queries over the matter.
Thus far, an official account of what took place in Somalia has yet to be released with the exact number of dead and injured yet to be known.
