Fake lawyer to spend seven days in cell

09 July 2016, 08:46 Joseph Njung'eh

Nyeri - A fake lawyer who was nabbed in Nyeri will spend seven days in police custody as investigations continue, a magistrate’s court has ruled.

Washington Munene Macharia was arraigned before Nyeri Chief Magistrate John Onyiengo but did not take plea as police sought more time to probe him.

Kyalo Kadinzi, from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said the suspect was impersonating a High Court Advocate and also represented litigants in courts within Mount Kenya region.

He was arrested by a special team of detectives at his offices in Narumoru Township, Kieni East Sub-County, Nyeri.

“He was masquerading as a lawyer registered with Law Society of Kenya (LSK) and represented clients in courts within Mount Kenya region. Am applying for him to be detained for seven days while waiting for verification from LSK,” said the officer.

He added that police are also waiting for more complaints from the clients ‘purportedly represented’ by the suspect.

However, the suspect did not object the application. The court slated the case to be mentioned on July 15, this year.

“I have considered the application and the respondent did not object the application. He will be detained at Nyeri Central police station,” said the court.

The suspect had allegedly worked in the law profession for more than two years.

LSK Nyeri vice chairman, Muthui Kimani claimed that two years ago, the suspect was arrested as he left Nyeri law court after representing a client on a land matter.

“He was taken to the police station where he was bonded to appear in court on a Monday since it was on a Friday. However, he disappeared and vanished into thin air,” Kimani stated.
