Fake lawyer bond canceled over his character

Nyeri - A fake lawyer, Washington Munene Macharia, who was nabbed by detectives in Nyeri will remain in police custody until his case is fully heard and determined.
Nyeri High Court Judge Justice John Mativo canceled a KES.100,000 bond that had been issued by a magistrate’s court citing the character of the accused.
Mativo observed that, if released, there was likelihood the suspect will fail to attend court or interfere with witnesses.
He added that the accused, who was allegedly operating a law firm by the name M/S Macharia Munene Advocates, had escaped two warrants of arrest issued by Karatina and Kangema law courts in 2015.
“I am satisfied that on a balance of probabilities there are compelling reasons that justify the accused person denial of bail including his character, interest of justice and even the nature of the offence. The accused is a flight risk,” said the judge.
The bond had been given by Magistrate John Aringo on July 19, this year after overturning an earlier order issued by Magistrate Ruth Kefa who had directed police to detain the accused.
The prosecution through State Counsel Allan Wanjohi had opposed the issuance of the bond, thus appealed at High Court where the accused who was unrepresented pleaded to be released pending trial.
Macharia is accused of willfully pretending to be Advocate on diverse dates between 2010 and 2013 in Karatina, Narumoru Townships and elsewhere within Nyeri while not qualified to be an Advocate.
He, however denied the charges as the case continues.
