Nairobi - Hundreds of elderly persons received gifts and food donations from a Nyeri-based charity organisation to celebrate Easter.
The senior citizens drawn from various villages in Solio Settlement Scheme in Laikipia County were hosted by Purity Elderly Care Foundation (PECF).
They first had a meal together before each left with a basket packed with rice, maize, beans, wheat and maize flours, cooking oil, salt and vegetables.
PECF director, Joyce Kairu, said she decided to celebrate Easter with the poor elderly to bring equality in the community during holiday.
They were also treated with their favourite traditional music tunes while others took the ground to dance.
Kairu said the donations had been given by well wishers including businessmen.
“Our aim is to make the elderly smile by being kind to them. It is all Easter with the elderly. It is about Christ. Let us re-evaluate ourselves and do what we would want others to do for us,” said Kairu.
She lamented that there were well up persons travelling and having posh lives with their families but forgetting their parents who are living miserable lives.
PECF takes care of vulnerable elderly persons who are lonely, neglected, depressed, homebound or abused.
