Driver dies as lorry plunges into river
26 March 2016, 16:35
DrNyeri - A lorry plunged into River Gura at Tambaya Bridge in Mukurweini, Nyeri County, killing the driver on the spot.
Eyewitnesses said the lorry, which was carrying road construction materials to Mukurweini town, lost control before plunging into the river.
They suspected that its brakes could have failed.
“The lorry was on a high speed. The brakes could have failed because that speed was not normal and the driver is not new on this road,” said Peter Wambugu, a bodaboda operator.
He said efforts of saving the driver were futile as he was trapped inside the cabin.
“When we managed to remove him from the cabin he was already dead,” he said.
Residents called for erection of bumps in the area saying it was not the first incident.
“We have seen some motorists losing control and hitting the bridge. Some guide rails are destroyed,” they said. For the latest on national news, politics, sport, entertainment and more follow us on Twitter and likeour Facebook page!
