Nairobi - There was drama at Nanyuki Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary, after the management of the facility allegedly refused to release the body a preacher for burial.
Relatives and friends said they arrived at the mortuary early in the morning to witness postmortem exercise of the body of Archdeacon John Gitari and later go with the body but that did not happen.
Drama was witnessed after security officers barred journalists from entering the facility, saying they had clear instructions from the management that they should not enter.
They had to forcefully enter, with the medical superintendent Dr Sammy Kilonzo visibly hiding at the nearby Youth Friendly VCT center.
Archdeacon Anthony Gitonga of AIPCEA Murang’a diocese said they were taken in circles the whole day, being sent to Nanyuki police station and back several times.
Gitonga said that they had been told that the postmortem was be conducted on Monday but that did not happen.
Again when they came they had not done it and the body was expected at the church for an overnight stay.
Jane Muthoni, a sister-in-law said Gitari, 54, who hails from Amboni village in Mweiga, Nyeri County disappeared three weeks ago and his body found at the mortuary after a long search.
The body was however released later without the exercise being conducted, with the family saying they were not interested with court cases.
She noted that since preparations were complete including digging of the grave they decided to carry the body and bury it as it was meant to stay at the church overnight as it is the norm.
