Pokot - A family at Nyarkulian, Pokot is still in disbelief after their 14-year-old daughter announced plans to get married to lightening, locally known as yelat.
Excitement from the community upon her arrival brought business to a standstill as the residents flocked the suitor's home to witness the unusual marriage negotiations.
The girl’s sister, Cherotich Chereng said that the invisible man appeared to them 7 years ago when they were fetching water. They informed the parents, performed some rituals and the man disappeared.
“He was a young boy when he showed up and we used to play together, but my parents couldn’t see him,” the class six pupil at Nyarkulian primary school said.

She claimed that the man lives underground, a few metres away from their homestead. It is reported that since the beginning of this year, the girl has not attended school. Her sister also noted that the man has been visiting daily, requesting her to convince their parents to allow them to get married.
This affair has gone to the extend of the man offering the girl some cash to woo her mother.
“I was furious and asked the girl to tell the man to appear so I can see him. Then he appeared. He was short and was holding a smartphone in his hands. We never talked. I just stared at him and after few minutes he vanished,” said the mother.
The family says they are now stressed and are ready to give the girl for marriage so they can have peace, with local leaders saying they are unable to prosecute an invisible man for intending to marry a minor.
