Nairobi - Residents of Gakindu village, Mukurweini Nyeri County, were treated to a rare incident after a woman collapsed and died during her mother’s burial ceremony.
The mourners were forced to halt the burial of Esther Wanjiru, 72, to organize the funeral of Pauline Wangari, 30.
Wangari, who was suffering epilepsy according to family members, collapsed few minutes after her mother’s coffin arrived at the homestead with pallbearers.
She was rushed to Mukurweini District hospital where she was confirmed dead.
Relatives sought for burial permit to bury them together while other mourners waited at home to conduct one funeral service.
Village youths were quickly mobilized to dig the second grave while residents raised funds in a short while to buy another coffin.
“We decided to bury them together to avoid much expenses. She suffered shock since she was very close to her mother,” said one member of the burial committee.
Relatives said Wangari was largely affected by her mother’s death, and that since her demise she was sleeping in her bed
