Deputy Governor threatens to resign if Senate removes his boss from office

08 September 2016, 13:54 Joseph Njung'eh

Nyeri - Nyeri deputy Governor, Samuel Wamathai and County Executive Committee (CEC) secretaries have threatened to resign if Governor Nderitu Gachagua is impeached by Senate.

The move will however create constitutional vacuum, thus necessitating a by-election.

The officials said they will leave office in spirit of collective responsibility and in solidarity with their boss.

Wamathai confessed that he had been approached to take up the Governor’s seat once the Governor is fully ousted by Senate.

The seven executive secretaries also condemned the MPs who stormed the Governor’s office recently, terming the move as ‘detestable, unacceptable and totally repugnant to the ethics and principles of public service’.

“In the unlikely event of forcing out Governor Gachagua from Office on grounds of the flawed allegations raised, we shall resign from our offices in the spirit of collective responsibility, which is indeed the very basis from which the stated false allegations emanate,” said Charles Githinji who is in charge of Health services.

They said the County boss is innocent as they pleaded with Senate to absolve him of any crime.

Githinji said local Members of County Assembly (MCAs) have been harassing the Executive Secretaries since they assumed office in year 2013.

“The Governor was not given an opportunity to defend himself at the County Assembly and this sends a very frightening signal to us all in the County Executive Committee, more so because since 2013 the Assembly has continuously harassed the executives, thereby hampering normal Service Delivery in the County,” Githinji further stated.
