Court of Appeal orders TSC to immediately pay teachers September salaries

Nairobi - Teachers will be paid their September salaries after the Teachers Service Commision TSC has been ordered by the Court of Appeal.
The Court said Friday that under the agreement in which the 50/60% teachers payrise was cancelled, there was a provision to allow teachers earn their dues since they were on a legal strike.
Justice Nelson Abuodha also ordered the TSC to remit dues it owes to teachers unions KNUT and KUPPET with immediate effect.
The court also ordered the TSC to pay the salaries with immediate effect.
TSC had sought to delay the ruling by 30 days to prepare itself but Abuodha stated that the welfare of teachers was on the line and the TSC had prior knowledge that they would have to pay teachers their salaries.
" Teachers must be paid with immediate effect and any outstanding dues to teachers unions also remitted," he said.
The TSC had earlier in the week stated that it was consulting on whether to pay teachers their salaries after President Uhuru Kenyatta ordered them to pay teachers.
TSC had withheld salaries for over 240,000 teachers who had taken part in the Strike in September.
Only 44,000 teachers were paid their dues after attending classes in the same period of time.
