CORD files motion to stop Uhuru from poaching opposition MPs

Nairobi - The CORD coalition has filed a motion to stop the nominees to the Cabinet by President Uhuru Kenyatta as well as bar him from poaching MPs from the Coalition in future without consulting with opposition chiefs.
Led by ODM chief of Political Affairs Opiyo Wandayi, the Coalition states that the move by Uhuru to handpick leaders from the opposition is illegal as he does not see the need to seek counsel from opposition chiefs.
The latest round of appointments have seen Malindi MP Dan Kazungu elevated to Mining Cabinet Secretary.
Earlier in the year, Joseph Nkaissery, also an ODM member was picked by the President to become Interior CS.
" There is bound to be consultation before appointment of members of the opposition," Wandayi states.
He also cites a lack of gender balance as a key reason to stop the appointees taking office.
He says that in the Cabinet appointments, there are no ladies that have ascended to office, which he says goes against the spirit of the Constitution.
If the appointments go through, there will be only 5 of 20 CS's who are female which flouts the two thirds gender rule, Wandayi adds.
The move follows the decision by the Parliamentary Committee vetting the appointments which has so far rubber- stamped all of them.
