CORD disowns Muthama, Orengo statement

18 October 2016, 18:22 William Korir

Nairobi - CORD has no 2017 Presidential candidate yet, its leaders have stated.

According to CORD management committee co-chairmen senators James Orengo (Siaya, ODM) and Johnson Muthama (Machakos, Wiper), the coalition already had a presidential candidate.

But that statement has been rebuffed by the CORD leadership led by Raila Odinga, saying that nothing of that sort has happened just yet.

" There is no candidate yet. That will be decided when the time comes," Raila told News24 on phone.

However, the pressure is already on the CORD leadership to announce the name, as it aims to match up with President Uhuru Kenyatta who has already been declared the Jubilee candidate.

But that is yet to be agreed for now, especially with the emergence of Musalia Mudavadi as a part of the race.

Talk of bringing in Amani National Congress leader Mudavadi for a super alliance has also divided the coalition, with Musyoka insisting that admission of other members must be based on an aspect of sacrifice and numbers.

" I don’t think that what matters is everybody to come on board, even those people who were not eating tear gas when we were trying to reform the IEBC (Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission). There must also be an element of sacrifice," he said on Citizen TV.

What is obvious though is that it will be a roller-coaster ride for the CORD honchos ahead of the 2017 polls.
