Confusion over compensation of families of slain KDF soldiers

16 February 2016, 18:51 Victor Tinto

Nairobi - There is confusion over the compensation of families of KDF soldiers killed in the Al Adde attack in Somalia.

Topmost, the families of the dead are yet to be compensated by the military.

A military source told News24 that the process usually takes some time but that it will eventually take place.

" It takes time for the compensation to take place but not too much," the source stated.

Another issue is the amount of compensation for the families.

Being that they served under the joint command of the African Union Mission in Somalia AMISOM, the families are due a grant from the body as well as the KDF.

There is uncertainty over whether the families will get just one or both.

" We have asked about the compensation and even added that we are aware of the AMISOM payoff to the KDF," the family of a soldier who died in the attack in Al Adde that has already buried him told News24 in confidence, in fear of victimization.

There are stories that some families in the past have not been compensated as required but that, the family says will be known once the KDF is ready.

A call to KDF headquarters over the matter was not answered.

The military has yet to announce how many soldiers died in the Al Adde attack as well as the injured and missing together with what next for the families of the deceased.
