COMMENT: Why Raila has already succeeded in failing 2017 elections

15 July 2016, 20:34

Nairobi - Many of us fondly remember Raila’s hey days when he would outwit and floor political giants during the then dreadful Moi era. Then came 2002 and the unforgettable KIBAKI TOSHA slogan that would catapult a repeat political failure into the presidency to the chagrin of Moi’s cowed lieutenants.

But times have changed, and so has the political landscape. Unlike the Moi era which readily provided the opposition a base of implicitly enhancing their political careers, the current political landscape is a totally strange land full of uncharted territories, scouted by seasoned amateurs, and oftentimes ruled by a new crop of career politicians who seem to be fast mastering the dirty tricks, theatrics, and intrigues.

There is no longer Nyayo House which helped create heroes out of village boys, distraught university comrades, and disenchanted men and women. Nobody is detaining dissidents in Manyani, Kamiti, or Shimo La Tewa any longer. What of corruption? Yes, corruption is still rife, alive, and kicking. Only that the opposition battalion is made up of equally corrupt men and women. In other words, the opposition is just a lesser devil!

The latter day Raila is no longer vibrant, charismatic, or even farsighted. He is not the hero our mothers and fathers looked up to way back in the 1980s when Kenyans were fed up with the Nyayo Politics. He is no longer a saviour a majority of Kenyans are craving for.

The latter day Raila is like a worn out, toothless, and hungry dog whose earsplitting barks hardly send vibrations across the nation. He might have won the 2007 elections, but his aloofness, incompetence, and too much talk during the ruinous Grand Coalition Government reduced him to a mere political Cry-Baby. Kenyans realized his other ugly side and would later on punish him in 2013 general elections.

Fast rewind 2016: the latter day Raila has since seemingly succumbed to his political fate. That he did not learn a lesson by allowing his foot soldiers to frustrate the then so-called Pentagon members’ way back in 2006-2007 pre-election era, is proof enough that Raila is an intolerant tyrant who has no room for other budding politicians. That Raila repeatedly refused to reach out to Ababu namwamba, and cowardly schemed to hoodwink Western Politicians instead, is yet again enough proof that he is not man enough to tame his loose foot soldiers.

With 2017 first approaching, and the pollsters favouring the would-be incumbent, President Uhuru Kenyatta, it is now an open secret that yet again, just like in 2013, Raila has already succeeded in failing 2017 general elections! And the most sensible thing for him to do is to save his face from unnecessary scorn and opt to resign from active politics. Without the Western vote block, Raila can only become Kenya’s Fifth Head of State in a scripted movie!
