Child dies after falling into a pit latrine in Narok

17 April 2016, 15:30

Narok - A three-year-old child has died after he fell in an open pit latrine in London estate near Narok Town on.

The child was in the company of other children who were playing in a open field when he fell into the pit.

The children rushed to call the family members to rescue the minor but unfortunately, the child was confirmed dead by upon arrival at Narok County Referral Hospital.

Narok North Deputy OCPD Charles Amollo condemned residents who dig pit latrines and leave them unattended saying they were posing environmental challenge.

“The open pits pose danger to young children who play in these area and animals that roam about looking for pasture. In the night hours, it is more dangerous since once cannot see in darkness,” he said.

He added farmers have lost hundreds of livestock when they fall into open pits while grazing and asked the landowners to ensure that protective measures are taken to prevent any eventualities that may occur.

“Sometime criminals kill people and dump them into the pits,” he added.

He called on investors who have dug pit latrines and not covered them to do so immediately because they risk being arrested.

The police boss said investigations are underway to ascertain the owner of the plot and the person responsible for digging the pit latrine.

The father to the deceased Simon Koikai asked the county government to put legal measures that will see the culprits of such offenses pushed severely.

“I have lost my son because of somebody’s careless action, the land owner should be punished severely,” he noted.
