Bundalangi residents cautioned against buying dead

30 March 2016, 14:59 Zainabu Freelancer tourist

Busia - The public health department in Bundalangi constituency, Bunyala sub-County of Busia has cautioned area residents against eating dead fish from Nzoia River.

Public Health Officer, Joseph Lok Oprong noted with concern that some residents from Budalang’i have been picking dead fish from Nzoia River for the last five days.

Oprong cautioned residents against consuming the fish and water from the river, noting that this was a disaster in the making.

The officer expressed fear that the water may have been contaminated by either a substance or a chemical.

Both sand and fish harvesters have been beneficiaries of the scenario since last Thursday, when dead fish was first spotted in the river.

Oprong said samples of the water had been taken to laboratory in Kakamega for analysis.

He added that it is after the laboratory tests are conducted and results released that an explanation to the phenomenon will be given by the health department.

The river water has turned brown, and has a molasses-like smell.

As he sounded the warning, scores of people had either sold the fish at throw away prices or eaten it in their respective homes.

Some of those who defied the public health officer’s caution and ate the fish complained of stomach-ache.

A victim, Silvanus Bwibo, 79, of Igigo village, North Bunyala location said that he was advised by a nurse from the locality to go for medical examination and treatment.
