Bizarre as Murang’a man kills mother, burns body

26 June 2016, 18:30 Joseph Njung’eh

Nairobi - A sombre mood has engulfed residents of Kamacharia area of Murang’a County after a 76-year-old mother was brutally murdered and her body burnt, allegedly by her son.

According to police, Esther Mugure is suspected to have been murdered at night before her house was set on fire.

The area residents found Mugure’s house reduced to ashes and her body burnt beyond recognition.

Police said initial investigations, the residents linked the murder to the deceased’s son, James Maina, whom they accused of having been continuously issuing death threats to his mother over land related issues.

A neighbour to the deceased who sought anonymity said that Maina had been spotted carrying petrol in a 3-litre jerrican.

Maina, who is already under police custody, allegedly killed his mother after she declined to give him a piece of land.

According to the neighbour, the suspect had borrowed a KES.900, 000 loan from a micro finance institution which he was unable to repay forcing his mother to intervene to avoid the auctioning of the family land.

Police said further reports indicated that the mother asked two of Maina’s sisters to repay the loan and in return acquire the suspect’s land.

It was alleged that Maina committed the heinous act to conceal the evidence on loan repayment agreement in which his mother was a key witness.

Confirming the incident, Murang’a County Police commander Naomi Ichami said they have already arrested Maina and he would be arraigned in court soon.

She said the remains were removed and taken to Murang’a county hospital mortuary for post-mortem.
