Babu Owino to retire from campus politics

Nairobi - Students Organization of Nairobi University (SONU) chairman, Babu Owino says he plans to retire from university politics at the end of his current term in office.
Babu, who is the longest serving SONU leader, said he will vie for the Embakasi East parliamentary seat in the coming general election.
“Under the new SONU constitution, this is my last term. I will not vie again, even if the constitution is amended,” Owino said in an interview on Tuesday.
His re-election as the SONU leader was angrily protested by a section of University of Nairobi (UoN) students who destroyed university property, forcing the institution to close indefinitely.

The institution later suspended 62 students, among them Mike Jacobs, who was Owino’s competitor in the elections.
However, Owino says some of the suspended students were innocent.
“The suspension of the 62 students was due to the riots that led to the destruction of university property, but we are going to talk to the management and return those who were innocent,” Owino said.
He also took a swipe at NACADA chair, John Mututho over his allegations that some UoN students deal in drugs and other illegal substances.
“Mututho’s allegations were based on rumours, and this cannot be admissible in a court of law. It is a big shame for him to make such reckless statements.
“If he thinks I am involved in drugs, let him prove and record a statement with the police so that I can be arrested and arraigned in court for committing an offence,” Owino stated.
