Nairobi - Orange Democratic Movement Nairobi Branch chairman and former Nairobi Mayor George Aladwa has escaped jail time, after securing release on bail over allegations of Hate Speech.
Aladwa has been under fire over an incident in which he stated that there would be bloodshed and tears if CORD leader Raila Odinga loses the 2017 General Elections.
He was caught in a video making those remarks in Kibera during Mashujaa Day October 20 last month.
Aladwa was arraigned before Nairobi Chief Magistrate Daniel Ogembo.
Ogembo however dismissed an application by the Director of Public Prosecutions DPP Keriako Tobiko to
have Aladwa detained till the case is heard and determined.
prosecution on Friday asked the court to deny the former Nairobi mayor
bond on the grounds that there is an increase in hate speech and
incitement cases in the country.
But Ogembo said it was Aladwa's right to get bail and he was thus released on a KES 500,000 cash bail.
" It is every Kenya's constitutional right to freedom and the accused is no different," he stated.
Aladwa has denied the charges, saying he was misquoted.
