Youth in Nyeri excluded from recruitment into KDF

Nyeri - The dreams of more than 70 youths from Nyeri Central sub-County aspiring to join Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) on Wednesday hit snag.
They were turned away from Ruring’u stadium where the recruitment exercise was going on after they found themselves at the wrong recruitment centre.
Among those affected was a group of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camping near the stadium.
The IDPs who had been camping at the grounds for more than one year were the first to arrive at the stadium with high hopes of joining the military and directly secure employment and end their predicaments.
However, the exercise was marked by a low turnout compared to the previous years where every potential youth showed up in the field and gave a trial.
According to Lt. Col. Edward Kimosop of Kenya Navy and in charge of the recruitment, most of the candidates in Nyeri Central were not born in the area though they had acquired their identity cards there.
He said potential candidates are supposed to be recruited at their place of birth not where their ID cards were issued.
The exercise saw only one lady and four men qualifying expected to report at the military training college on November 3, 2013.
He said the turnout was recommendable given the poor weather conditions, adding that no cases of fake document presentation or other forms of malpractices was noted.
