Staff threaten to burn hotels over pay

27 May 2013, 16:36 Alloys Musyoka

Over 300 hotel workers of Ora Group of Hotels at Watamu in Malindi district within Kilifi County have threatened to set on fire hotels run by the company if the management fails to pay their dues amounting to KES 4 million shillings.

The workers are from Ora Jacaranda, Ora Watamu and Ora Twiger Resort all located in Chembe Kibabamche area within Watamu tourist area.

The workers demonstrated outside the hotels carrying twigs and placards demanding that the hotels management pay them their arrears as quickly as possible.

They claimed that the hotel has refused to pay them their dues even after laying them off last month when the hotel closed its facility following the onset of the low season.

Their representative Garama Kombe alleged that the hotels have been paying its workers half the salary since September 2012, a move they had opposed earlier.

He said the hotels had promised to clear their dues by April, which never happened.

“We have also received information that all Directors of the Ora Group of Hotels have secretly sneaked out of the country and this means they will not pay us,” he observed.

They also claimed that some of the hotel suppliers were also demanding payment of their arrears amounting to millions of shillings.

Garama now wants the government to intervene and help them get their money from the hotel owners who are playing hide-and-seek game with them.

“We want the government to compel these people to pay us because if nothing is done they may continue with the trend of not paying their employees,” he said.

Ora group of hotels Financial Controller Daniel Mbuvi refused to comment on the matter saying he was not ready to discuss it.
