Women urged to protect their daughters against FGM

Nakuru - Nakuru County women representative, Mary Mbugua has urged women to protect their daughters against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).
Mbugua said that some groups of women are going around the County performing FGM which is prohibited by law.
She noted those girls who have undergone the knife at tender age develop problems birth later in life especially when giving birth.
Speaking in Nakuru town on Monday, Mbugua said it was the responsibility of every resident to fight the vice.
She said it was regrettable that some detrimental cultural practices were still being carried out in the world today.
“Everyone in this County of ours has responsibility to fight FGM because we cannot allow some old traditional cultures to continue taking place,” she said.
Commenting on the early marriage, the woman representative said that she will not relent on the fight against early marriage.
She said some men were taking advantage of young girls who were clearing high school by marrying them.
“This is not good and it has to stop,” said Mbugua.
The women rep said that central government needs to come up with stringent measures against men who marry underage girls.
