Tharaka Maendeleo ya Wanawake chairperson Aniceta Kiriga has called on women in the area to outgrow the habit of relying on local political leaders for prosperity.
Speaking to the media, Kiriga challenged the women to reclaim their freedom from men who have continued to hold them hostage in terms of development initiatives and business ventures.
The women leaders said time was long gone when Tharaka women were confined within the homestead to take care of children and their husbands alongside grazing of livestock in the fields while their male counterparts engaged in lighter social and business activities.
She cited the need for all women elites in the area to be more aggressive in sensitizing the community on the need to invest in girl child education so as to uplift the general living standards of the adult woman for better contribution in development ventures within and outside Tharaka region.
Kiriga challenged women of all ages to move beyond social and cultural restrictions strive towards making viable investment decisions so as to improve their socio - economic status and be able to compete with their fellow women nationally and internationally.
She also called on the women who have interest in business activities to visit government offices in the area so as to get the right information on how to access funds set aside for women.
The women leaders said the government has established the women enterprise fund through the ministry of gender and social services and Tharaka women were not exempted from the same since the local district office has all the information regarding the kitty.
Kiriga encouraged women to work towards demanding for their rights from the community saying the government has put in place appropriate legal measures to protect women from any undue harassment likely to stop them from achieving their personal development goals.
