Women barred from participating in KDF recruitment

Nairobi - Women from Kieni East sub-county, Nyeri have been (Monday) barred from participating in Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) recruitment drive.
The senior recruiting officer in charge of the exercise, Liutenant Colonel Solomon Menye, said there was no slot for female candidates in the sub-county.
“Last year we recruited more women than men in this division and thus we have to balance. That is the reason we are not recruiting female candidates but we shall recruit them in other centres in the County,” said Menye while briefing media at Chaka grounds.
He said the exercise is seeking to recruit six candidates from the area while the recruiting teams consisted of Kenya Army, Kenya Air Force, Kenya Navy and the Defence Forces Constabulary.
However, hundreds of young men were turned away at the recruitment centre for failing to meet some qualifications and instructions.
“In our advertisement we indicated that qualified persons should turn up with their original documents not photocopies. We have rejected the photocopy of documents since we must abide with regulations,” Menye added.
Prospective candidates who arrived at the field at 6.00am in the morning were vetted by the KDF officers.
Part of the screening and vetting involved physical fitness where candidates ran for a five-kilometre race and later underwent medical check-ups and tests, height and academic qualifications.
The recruitment exercise kicked off Monday nationally and is expected to end at the beginning of next month.
In Nyeri County the recruitment drive will on Tuesday proceed to Mweiga, Nyeri town, Tetu, Othaya, Mathira East, Mathira West and Mukurweini sub-counties, respectively.
