Nyeri - A 28-year-old mother was released on a KES 50 000 bond by a Nyeri court after denying charges of killing her newborn baby.
It is alleged that Grace Wairimu Mwangi committed the act on January 26, 2014 at Ruirii village in Kieni constituency.
Appearing before resident magistrate John Aringo, Wairimu denied the charges of infanticide that had been leveled against her.
According to the prosecution, the accused person had been left home by her mother who had gone to church but on return, she did not find her.
The mother reportedly called her on phone but she said that she was in a maternity ward at a local hospital and later switched off her phone.
The following day, Wairimu returned home in the evening but without a baby as had been expected; she said it had died in the hospital.
Further reports indicate that mauled remains of an infant were found near the accused person’s home a week later.
The neighbours suspected Wairimu and on interrogating her, she admitted to dumping the infant after it passed on during delivery.
They reported the matter at Nairutia police station and the accused was arrested.
Her case will be heard on February 24, 2014.
