Woman gets two years for escaping from cell

09 June 2015, 10:18 Nyamota Obare

Nakuru - A murder suspect accused of escaping from police custody was Monday handed a two-year jail term by a Nakuru court.

Anne Wamaitha Kamau, a mother of one, was found guilty of escaping from Nakuru Central police station on June 6,2014 where she was being held awaiting to answer to murder charges at Nakuru high court.

Chief magistrate Doreen Mulekyo who delivered the ruling said that the accused had put at risk the jobs of the officers manning the police cells besides delaying justice for the deceased family.

“To deter detainees from escaping police custody, this court has sentenced you to two years imprisonment,”said Mulekyo.

The prosecution told the court that Wamaitha mysteriously escaped from the police station after her arrest following allegations that she was a key suspect in a murder case.

Wamaitha was re-arrested in Nakuru town on June 5 following a tip from the public.

When the charges of escaping police custody were read to her, she admitted guilt and pleaded for leniency.

In her mitigation, she told the court that she had a young child and that she was the sole bread winner of her family.

However, Mulekyo said she had considered the accused’s mitigation and that the court was lenient enough to sentence her to two years before being appearing in court to answer to the murder charges.

“The offence of murder is a serious offence but after the court carefully considered your mitigation, you must serve the jail term before being charged afresh with murder,” said the magistrate.
