Nyeri - An elderly woman was on Wednesday sentenced to 18 months in jail after failing to repay a loan guaranteed by her Chama members.
Ann Mwangi was imprisoned by Senior Resident Magistrate Vincent Nyakundi for failing to repay a KES 100 000 loan taken from the Kenya Women Finance Trust (KWFT).
The accused admitted in court that she is a member of KWFT and had received a cheque of KES 100 000 five years ago.
The loan was guaranteed by members of her self-help group while she offered her three cows and some furniture as collateral.
A witness told the court that Ann had already started repaying the debt by making contributions for three consecutive months before she disappeared mysteriously for one and a half years.
The group members who acted as her guarantors were forced to raise the remaining amount to repay the loan.
While delivering the judgment, the magistrate said the prosecution had presented adequate evidence in the matter to convict the accused person.
She was however given 14 days to appeal against the judgment.
