Bungoma - A middle-aged woman in Bungoma town died on the spot Monday morning after the motorcycle taxi she had boarded was crashed by a train.
The woman, who is said to be a primary school teacher in one of the schools in Bungoma was with her young child at the time of the accident. She fell on the railway track after the train hit the motorcycle and got her head decapitated after being dragged for more than 50 metres. The child and the motorcycle taxi operator escaped with minor injuries.
Eyewitnesses told journalists that the motorcycle taxi operator, who was ferrying the woman to town, disregarded the hooting of the oncoming train thus causing the accident. The train was ferrying good from Uganda.
“The motorcyclist who had seen the train was in a great hurry, he tried to cross the railway track before the oncoming train that was hooting, in vain. The train knocked down the motorcycle killing the woman instantly,” said one man who was at the scene of the incident.
The accident caused a major traffic snarl-up in the town, with curious members of the public flocking the scene where the woman’s decapitated head and torso lay.
The body of the deceased was later moved to Bungoma District Hospital Mortuary by policemen who also arrested the motorcycle rider. The kid and the motorcyclists are recuperating at the same hospital.
Police who arrested the bodaboda operator said he will be arraigned in court once he fully recuperates for riding the motorcycle dangerously and causing the death of the woman.
