Woman denied bail in drug trafficking case

The female drug trafficker arrested at the Moi airport in Mombasa is to remain in custody until the final hearing of her case.
This came into light after the Mombasa Law courts rejected her application to be released on bail as her case awaits hearing.
Speaking at the Mombasa law courts, Principle Magistrate Stephen Riechi said that the accused was likely to escape from the hand of the law and that that denied her the right to be granted release on bond.
In her plea for the bond, Elizabeth Anyango Awiti, who was nabbed with heroin worth KES 11 million at the Moi International Airport said that she is a mother with no record of wrong doing and had a right to be granted bond to attend to her family as the case progresses.
The court however disqualified her request and ruled that she is to remain in custody until the next hearing of her case on June 27, 2013.
Even though the fight against drugs has intensified in Mombasa, drug trafficking and drug use has remained a major challenge in the coast region.
