A 33-year old woman and her 7-year old daughter perished in a fierce inferno that consumed an entire wooden plot and damaged property worth thousands of shillings in Mairo-Inya town, Nyandarua North District on Saturday evening.
Jane Wanjiku and her daughter were burnt beyond recognition in the 10:00 PM incident although the cause of the fire could not be established.
The plot was also used as a store for second-hand clothes and agricultural produce.
Business people in the plot lost property through looting by youths who pretended to help salvage items in the fire that could be seen several kilometres away.
Her two daughters who had traveled to her maternal home in Nyeri and were to return that fateful day managed to escape the ordeal.
The woman was a key witness in an incident where her nephew was murdered by her come-we-stay boyfriend three days ago.
Police have launched investigations into the matter.
