Woman dumps foetus in pit latrine

A woman shocked a Nyahururu court after saying that she dumped the body of her dead new born in a pit latrine in order to reduce the cost of burial arrangements on her relatives.
Appearing before Principal Magistrate Vincent Kiptoon, Anna Njoki, 29 said that her relatives were too poor to meet the costs thus she chose the option of throwing the dead foetus in a pit latrine on October 24.
On the fateful day, she had been left home alone in Kiandege, Nyandarua county when she procured the abortion only for neighbours to suspect foul play after she appeared 'flat'.
She was reluctant to reveal the whereabouts of her child and was accorded a thorough beating before taking the irate residents to the family's pit latrine where she had disposed the dead body of the fully grown baby girl.
She pleaded with the court to pardon her since her family was poor and she might be of help to the family, adding that her family's situation forced her to commit the act.
Prosecuting officer Damaris Malenge recommended that the accused should attend a family planning clinic where she will be advised on how to avoid unwanted pregnancies.
The community will help her start a dressmaking business since she has the required expertise, having undergone training at a handcrafts center in Eldoret.
