Two people died on Thursday in North Imenti District, Meru County, after they were involved in separate accidents.
A hit-and-run driver knocked down an 86-year-old pedestrian along the Meru - Mikinduri road before landing in a ditch.
Area police boss Tom Odero said the woman was hit by the vehicle as she attempted to cross the road and died on the spot.
He said the identity of the woman could not be revealed as her next of kin had not been notified of her death.
Odero said the driver of the vehicle that was travelling from Meru to Mikinduri escaped uninjured. He said police have launched a man hunt for him.
The mangled wreck of the vehicle was towed to the Meru police station.
“We are investigating what happened and the driver suspected to have caused the accident will be charged in court once arrested,” Odero confirmed.
The body was removed to the Meru Level Five Hospital mortuary.
Odero warned motorists against flouting the traffic rules saying the police would be closely monitoring them to ensure they do not overspeed or overload.
He said errant drivers would face the full wrath of the law, appealing to drivers to observe caution when approaching the area to avert causing similar accidents.
Later in the day, a hawker died after he fell from a moving bus in Meru town.
Odero said the deceased, whose identity he could not disclose, had boarded the bus to sell maize to the passengers.
Witnesses said the man jumped off the bus and fell. He died on the spot.
The accident that took place near the Kensilver Bus stage left residents in shock and disbelief.
Odero cautioned road users to be cautious in order to avoid unnecessary deaths.
Police officers from the Meru police station later removed the body to the Meru District mortuary where an autopsy will be conducted.
