Woman, 41, dies as flood cause havoc in Migori

10 April 2014, 20:21 Oduor Omondi

Migori - The heavy rains pounding Migori County continues to wreck havoc with the latest victim being a 41 year old widow who died after a swollen River Kuja swept her on Tuesday afternoon while washing dishes at Wath Ong’er village.

According to Simon Awidhi a Red Cross volunteer, Sofia Mutenga, a mother of five who lives close to River Kuja was swept away outside her house while washing utensils.

He said the search for the body had been hampered by raging waters but they were optimistic of making positive strides by the end of Thursday evening. The search has been extended to Kao beach in Sori.

Area deputy county commissioner James Namtala confirmed the incident urging the public to exercise extra caution as they approach rivers across the county which have swollen following heavy downpour in the region.

Namtala appealed to those living in flood prone areas to move to higher grounds to reduce the risks associated with floods.

In a bid to curb other disasters, Migori County’s department of environment, natural resources and disaster management in collaboration with the Kenya Red cross Migori branch have launched a disaster preparedness programme to sensitize residence in flood prone areas

In a meeting held on Wednesday and chaired by the environment director Tom Misenya in Oria area, Uriri sub-county, the residents decried lack of an evacuation centre, a situation that forces them to run to their relatives when heavy floods strike.

He said the ministry will improve the basic facilities in the already established evacuation centres.

He said improvement and establishment of evacuation centres will help residents in floods hot spots get refuge when their homesteads are marooned by floods.
