Will Machakos go with Mutua or Kalonzo?
13 August 2015, 18:36
Nairobi - With Kalonzo Musyoka and Alfred Mutua now political enemies, who will Machakos residents go for? A clear development record or political affiliations?
The two leaders have not seen eye to eye for the best part of two years and are well on course to chart different political paths come the 2017 elections, with Mutua widely expected to go on his own and not seek Kalonzo's support for re-election.
Kalonzo is set to support a different candidate for the polls, with the recent stories of him inviting Nairobi Senator Mike Mbuvi Sonko, drawing conclusions of their own.
Sonko though says that he cannot compete with Mutua as he is like a brother to him.
Sonko has been linked with a move to Machakos to contest the governorship in the 2017 General Elections, but he now says that he and Mutua are not in competition at all.
He went on to praise Mutua, saying he has done a stellar job for Machakos residents and that he should stay put.
Question is though.
Will Machakos residents support Mutua and effectively disown Kalonzo, or will Kalonzo's footing as the Kamba kingpin see him have his way?
Michael Njenga, Political analyst
" I see it as a 50-50 contest to be honest.
" If Mutua goes it alone, he will need support from other Kamba leaders to persuade voters to stick with him. In any other part of the world, Mutua gets re-elected without question but this is Kenya.
" Party politics plays a big role and I would not be shocked to see Kalonzo's candidate win.
" If in any case Mutua does win, it will thus be the beginning of the end for Kalonzo's foothold on Ukambani politics.
" High stakes indeed.
Vincent Nzili, Political sciences lecturer
" It will be simple.
" If Kalonzo's candidate is any good, he will win it. If it is someone unsatisfactory, then Mutua will win it.
" With Sonko now out of the race, it has been mooted that Mutua's deputy Bernard Kiala will have a go. That Could sway the vote.
" Because of what Mutua has achieved in Machakos, he is a strong candidate in any case and will be tough to dislodge.
" I am sure however that Kalonzo will not want to lose such a battle on his home turf and that will make things tight. It will be battle royale which could come down to small issues such as who the elders support and such things.
