Why Kalonzo tails in polls

23 February 2012, 11:07 Kennedy Aseka

If recent opinion polls results released by pollster, Synovate are anything to go by, then it is true that Hon. Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka is not doing well politically. He has recently stagnated below 10% raising the question of how the vice president is politically rich in terms of his influence.

Although he trails the list with other big names like Hon. William Ruto and Hon. Musalia who tailed the poll list with a mere 1%, there is a lot to learn from this trend even as the country draws nearer to a general election.

Generally, Kalonzo prides of having a clean political career that spans more than twenty years. Having served in the KANU regime and subsequently found his way into the NARC government in 2002, this honourable member stands tall as one of the longest serving member of parliament. Besides this history, Hon. Kalonzo has outstandingly performed as the minister for Education, Foreign Affairs and Home Affairs. He has also come out clearly as a peace-maker in this region, steering peace efforts in neighbouring Somalia and Sudan.

The appointment of Hon. Kalonzo as the Vice President of the Republic in 2008 marked the peak of his career and most likely, his political graph is headed to the negative direction. As the VP, the son of Eastern Kenya has excellently represented the nation and the head of state in countless functions. Kudos! Hon. Kalonzo, Kitui North Member of Parliament.

With this brilliant, admirable and clean political career, one wonders why Kalonzo should be tailing in opinion polls when general elections are just around the corner. To make matters worse, his relationship with other influential politicians like Hon. Ruto and Uhuru remains questionable with two affiliate groups showing signs of pruning him from the so called G7 alliance. At this point the question that beckons is: What is wrong with H.E. The Vice President?

With no corruption scandal courting his name, Hon. Kalonzo has a long way to prove to Kenyans that he is the most fit candidate to succeed H.E. The President, Hon. Mwai Kibaki, who has remained mum on naming his successor. Though he has spearheaded the “Niko Fiti Campaign”, recent happenings portray him as the unlikely and “unfit” person to clinch the Presidency.

Kalonzo’s greatest undoing and weaknesses stem from his character and personality. His political profile presents him as indecisive, wavy and unstable in advancing an independent political course. He is seen by many as one who cannot think on his own during critical times. The 2007 race to state house equally tainted his name, taking away the little trust he was gaining from voters. What happened between ODM and ODM-K is still fresh in the minds of Kenyans, who get interviewed during these surveys. His association with the crumbling G7 is seen as Hon. Kalonzo’s move to be supported as a compromise candidate since the legality of Hon. Ruto and Hon. Uhuru vying remains uncertain.

It would be unfair and almost impossible to explain the tailing trend of the VP in opinion polls without mentioning his “Wiper” slogan. Who or what is he wiping? The choice of this slogan which was later converted into a political party as his ticket to the top job was a bullet at close range. He is better placed to explain his wiper ideologies but as far as Kenyans are concerned, Kalonzo is wiping himself from the political map of Kenya. Unlike other politicians being haunted by corruption scandals, Hon. Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka will forever be suffocated by his character and personality that form his core political DNA.
