Why I hate love poems

13 May 2015, 14:20 Shakila Alivitsa

Nairobi - Never give out a person's number without their permission. Ever.

It does not matter whether you think that you have their best interests at heart. You think that that person is a plus in my life or you are about to get them some business.

The number one rule is always ask for permission! A lot of people don’t!

WhatsApp may turn out to be another Facebook, especially if you are in a large group. Out of the blue some random number just starts texting you. My first thought is usually to wonder if you are some criminal that may be able to hack my M-Pesa. So normally, I never ignore like most people would advise you to do. I need to know if you are a serial killer, a witchdoctor, a thug; how you are in my circle and have my number.

I had such an incident this morning, at first I thought it was someone I knew until they wrote me a love poem. If you never want me to take you serious, just write me a poem. Especially when I do not even know you. Nothing wrong with poetry, just that it is not my thing. I ran through all the groups I was in because I had to figure out who this person was. Not in any group.

The profile picture was not of any help because he had painted his face. See why I could not let this one go? But, upon closer inspection I remembered the same picture on my friend’s profile. I knew she was the one who gave out the number. Without asking me first and to a clown further more.
I did not ask her about it but I know when I run into her, she will be with that clown and she will have some explaining to do.

Rules that govern you giving out my contacts.

1. If you do not have a business proposition for me, do not give out my number to strange people I do not know. Even if you know them.

2. If they ask you for my number, ask me first. If I am out of reach, again, wait to ask me. Wait until I resurface.

3. If it is not a job opportunity, do not give some person I do not know my number.

Which reminds me, there is the other category. You give them your CV, obviously it has all your contacts otherwise how else will they reach you?  But this people decide to use the contact information for personal reasons. They call, you pick because you have gotten the call back. But the reason they are calling is not for work, they helped themselves to your contacts and thought to offer you a free meal.

That is uncouth, if you did not know that by the way. Just saying. Next time, restrain yourself.
