What went wrong in the olympics?

13 August 2012, 15:20Onyango Alfred

I know many Kenyans are disappointed by our performance at the London 2012 Olympics, as we were expecting big things as per our tradition has always been to win gold. But alas! the dream was never to be despite Rudisha and Kemboi winning for us gold.

This reminds of the fate of our football which is already in doldrums and in need albeit of thinking if you want the last time we scored a goal forget about winning.

Anyway I don't want to talk about football because it is the most coveted game but in Kenya power wrangles have just killed and it will take us time to recover.

Back to olympics. The team Kenya officials had assured us of ten gold medals. Gold medals, not other medals. However as at now all medals hardly reach tent, that is far much away from our from the target. Something very hard to stomach.

The problems started long time ago when NOC wanted athletes to fly to Bristol for practice whereas the latter insisted on Kasarani. We don't know who was right.

A few days ago NOC chairman admitted they carried some athletes with injuries. That makes me ask myself on the credibility of the officials.

Surely, why must you carry injured players yet there are others who are equally as good as they are? Doesn't our National Olympic team not have doctors?

We had 47 athletes to carry our flag. However, the number of joy riders were as many as participants. Top government officials could not hesitate utilising the opportunity as most of the are rest assured they will not be in same position after march elections.

Why did the Minister for Sports and his assistant fly to London? They should have had more participants instead of these people who were squandering the public funds illegaly.

The Olympics involves several games and not just athletics.

I believe we can do very well in other disciplines. For instance the Maasai Morans can be very good in javelline, in which if they are trained they can easily set records.

In cycling we cannot be defeated considering the nature of our roads where we do cycle.

We must start talent search in all fields if we want to reverse the peformance come 2016 in Rio De jenairo Brazil.

Where do the students who perform well in field events go after national school games?

The power wrangling we have started seeing between AK and NOC should not be left to continue lest athletics undergoes what football is already undergoing.
