Busia - Residents of Mundulisia village, Bukhayo West Location of Matayos sub-county are still in shock after a 20-year-old woman gave birth to a baby girl with multiple congenital abnormalities.
The woman, who was helped to deliver by a midwife, took the baby to Busia Referral Hospital after noticing the defects.
The now 5-day-old baby needs urgent medical attention at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret according to Busia Referral Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr Janerose Ambuchi.
Ambichi said that the child needs lip and plastic surgery and other comprehensive tests to establish whether she could also be suffering from other ailments.
"Busia Referral Hospital will be able to handle such cases once the installation of the ICU and other modern machines currently undertaken by the County Government are bought," Ambuchi said.

She added that the child has neural tube defects which requires city scan that is only available at MTRH adding that she also appears to have developed skull base and calvarias deformities.
Calling upon pregnant women to ensure that they take folic acid after conception, she said that such cases of children born with congenital malfunction are caused by insufficient folic acid in their bodies.
Other well-wishers led by the County's First Lady Judy Ojaamong said they were moved by the baby's condition, thus their move to lend a hand for the girl to undergo treatment in Eldoret.
Judy appealed to mothers to deliver in hospitals and seek prenatal and postnatal care to avoid giving birth to children with abnormalities.
