Vihiga - Week-long activities have kicked off in Vihiga County to mark the 25th anniversary of Moses Mudavadi is slated for February 8.
On Saturday, Musalia Mudavadi launched the events at Mululu Primary School which is one of the excellent educational centres in the county and which was established by the former MP Moses Mudavadi.
Some of the events that are already taking place in the county include a free medical camp, cleaning of the urban centres and tree planting.
Addressing the residents, the former deputy prime minister said that he was confident the one week that has been dedicated to voluntary work and giving back to the community would make an impact in the lives of the people.
“As we mark the anniversary of Moses Mudavadi, I hope that the activities that we have lined up for the whole of the week will be of help to the people in the whole of Vihiga County,” he said.
The chairperson of the Memorial Anniversary Committee, Andrew Ligale said that plans were underway to make the ceremony a major event through which the community will benefit in the following years.
“The commemoration will be observed through a week-long of events beginning on February 1st to 7th within Vihiga County and outside the county. The activities reflect the key concerns that occupied his life and to which he devoted his life as a national leader. Some of the events include educational, cultural, health and environmental activities that will involve the public,”he said.
Among the other activities that have been lined up by the Mudavadi’s Memorial Committee includes a scholarly debate whose theme is ‘Heroism in Kenya: Who defines it?’
The debate is poised to attract high profile scholars in the community and beyond who will educate the society.
Also in place are plans to construct a coliseum that will be named Moses Budamba Mudavadi Cultural Centre, on land bought and betrothed to the Vihiga Cultural Society by the late leader and which the society has donated to the county government.
“The Moses Budamba Mudavadi Cultural Centre is a multipurpose coliseum that will be the largest commercial conference and indoor sports facility in the Western Region with an amphitheatre of a capacity of 3 000, a cultural village and hotel accommodation,” Ligale said.
Mudavadi was a close the larger Vihiga constituency MP who helped steer the community to greater heights and who is still remembered by the community for his exemplary lifestyle that helped shape the political future of the society.
