We yearn for a Kenyan Mandela

17 July 2013, 12:48 Pancras Mutuma

Isn’t proper selfless leadership what we all crave for as a nation? Isn’t that the ideal? Leaders that sacrifice all in the name of country? Leaders that are willing to be suffer for the people’s cause? Leaders that are without blemish? Nelson Mandela epitomises idealistic leadership.

He is indeed a leadership icon that should be emulated not only by leaders in Kenya but by leaders and aspiring leaders all around the world. We ought to emulate his ideals. His character. His enthusiasm.

If I was asked to equate leadership through a person, that person would be Nelson Mandela. His charisma is something to behold. His values are something every Kenyan should strive to live by.

Through the struggle against apartheid, he showed that indeed, all human beings are equal and deserve equal treatment and privileges. The struggle against the oppression and discrimination of the Dutch in South Africa shows charisma that we should take a lesson from. The young people in South Africa embraced Nelson Mandela as their role model and did their bit in supporting the struggle against apartheid. Kenyan youths yearn for a leader that is a role model.

We yearn for a Kenyan Mandela.

It is such leadership, such integrity that we yearn for and indeed, nurture as a country.

I envision a Kenya where positions of leadership are not occupied by the mighty in wallet of this country and instead, occupied by selfless leaders who put the country first as Mandela has done throughout the years.
