Nyandarua - Police in Nyahururu town have shot dead one of the most wanted criminals in the town and arrested 40 other suspects in a swoop that followed the 8:00 p.m incident.
The man in his early 30s was shot dead at Kiamaina village where a homemade pistol and a knife was recovered from him.
Nyandarua OCPD Benjamin Onsongo said the man has been terrorizing residents within the town and is believed to be the main suspect who attacked a tourist at Thompson falls last week where he stole money and other valuables.
He said that the suspect was killed at his hideout as he resisted police arrest.
Onsongo added that a an impromptu swoop was also conducted ,an operation which he said led to the arrest of over 40 at the main bus termini and other estates as they extorted money from matatu operators and residents.
“We have been having these complains on the mungiki suspects trooping back to the town from other counties. We launched investigations and arrested the gang leaders who were stationed in various areas,” he noted.
Onsongo said that the suspects demanded money from the matatu saccos promising to provide security.
He said that a special team of officers has been deployed in the entire region to make sure that the gang does not troop back.
The suspects who are being locked up at Nyahururu police station he said would be arraigned in court to face various charges.
He urged residents to report any case of harassment by the gang.
