Nairobi - The two leading players in the Mathare by-election, Stephen Kariuki of ODM and George Wanjohi of TNA, both voted early Monday and were confident of securing victory in the mini poll.
The election kicked off slowly in the morning, as voters queued to elect a new leader after Wanjohi's election was nullified by the Supreme Court.
Voting kicked off at 6AM and is expected to be completed by 5PM, even though the IEBC said it would extend the voting period if need be.
" The period will be extended but only if necessary, an IEBC official James Kanyi said.
Both voted early in the morning, with Kariuki first at around 8.30 AM and Wanjohi just before 10 AM.
Wanjohi, was quietly confident of securing victory.
" The election period has been good so far. We have campaigned well and we are very confident that we will come out on top in this election because I believe that the will of the people spoke the first time and will speak again, he said.
On his part, Kariuki was tense about proceedings.
" We have done our part and it is now upto the voters to decide who to choose but I am happy with the proceedings so far.
There were reports of leaflets which were distributed Sunday that stated Kariuki had quit the election, to which he reacted calmly.
" We know that those are underhand tactics that are being used to deter my supporters but I have allayed those fears to my supporters. I am here and have even voted, he added.
The two are expected to be the main competitors in the race and will likely come top of the board by the end of the day.
